LANDSCAPES (2008 – 2010)
Captivated by the abstract representation of landscape in art, I have long experimented with the capture of light and colour, water and surface, within my work. Landscapes represent a departure from earlier works, which are influenced by the impressionist paintings of Turner, Whistler and Monet, and moves toward the abstract capture of landscape and waterscape.
Produced as free-blown sculptural vessels, these works are embellished using the “late colouring” technique, which has been developed over a number of years. This involves the application of silver leaf to the body of the vessel once it has reached full size. Subsequently a layer of arranged colours is applied to the silver leaf surface. When heat is applied to the colour, the surface patination takes on an inimitable and infinite arrangements; abstracting and defying exacting compositions, producing a unique landscape. The internal colouration of the works is chosen to create depth or transparency for the surface design, and produces a myriad of effects when positioned in the light.
Using silver leaf and powdered glass lustre the abstract Landscapes produced have visible horizons, vitas or shimmering light on water, inspired frequently by ever changing scenes over the Thames from my home. Ultimately open to interpretation, these works play with the potential of the artist’s narrative and the audience’s imagination.
